74 Overseas Pharmacy Schools Removed from Singapore Pharmacy Council’s Approved List

Effective from 1 August 2020, 74 overseas pharmacy schools will be removed from the Singapore Pharmacy Council’s approved list. Only pharmacy qualifications conferred by the respective foreign institutions listed on the SPC’s registrable qualifications list are registrable in Singapore. Twinning programmes will NOT be registrable by SPC. The graduate must undertake the entire pharmacy course in the country where the main university confers the pharmacy degree. What does that mean for some students? Polytechnic Diploma graduates in Singapore Diploma students from a polytechnic in Singapore will have to do the full degree at the foreign university without getting advanced standing. The total duration will be 7 years (3 years diploma + 4 years degree). 2+2 Twinning programmes (popular option in Malaysia) A popular option in Malaysia is that students join one of Malaysia’s private institutions for the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) programme for 2 years and transfer to a respective foreign university overseas partner to complete the degree in another 2 years. As of 1 August 2020, this option of obtaining a pharmacy degree will not be registrable in Singapore. Time saving alternatives after O Level/IGCSE  (Australia and UK): A more time saving pathway to obtain a pharmacy degree is to gain admissions to a UK or Australian foundation programme (1 year) and progress to a Pharmacy degree programme (4 years)  approved by the SPC. O Level Route to Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) in the United States Most U.S. universities accepts the O Level as an academic qualification to be admitted for the undergraduate programme. Students can start off with a pre-pharmacy programme (2 years) followed by a  Doctor of Pharmacy (4 years) at an accredited pharmacy school n the US. The total duration is approximately 6 years.
