To become a qualified pharmacist in Singapore, you should have the a degree from the following universities: 1) Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) from the National University of Singapore – 4 Years 2) Overseas institutions recognised by the Singapore Pharmacy Council (SPC) – 4 Years History of Pharmacy in the UK There are over 30 Master of Pharmacy programmes from different providers throughout the UK and 12 of them are recognised by the Singapore Pharmacy Council (SPC) . The Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain was founded in 1841.The Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain was replaced by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the General Pharmaceutical Council in September 2010. The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) is the body responsible for the independent regulation of the pharmacy profession within England, Scotland and Wales, responsible for the regulation of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy premises. Singapore Pharmacy Council recognised UK institutions for Pharmacy Programmes The 2020/2021 tuition fee for a Master of Pharmacy ranges from £16,770 (approx. SGD 30,341) to £24,650 (approx. SGD 44,593) per year and the duration is 4 years. Minimum entry requirements are A-Level or Polytechnic Diploma. Students with O-level qualifications may complete a foundation course in the UK before progressing to the Master of Pharmacy. Effective from 1 August 2020, 74 overseas pharmacy schools will be removed from the Singapore Pharmacy Council’s approved list. Only pharmacy qualifications conferred by the respective foreign institutions listed on the SPC’s registrable qualifications list are registrable in Singapore. Twinning programmes will NOT be registrable by SPC. The graduate must undertake the entire pharmacy course in the country where the main university confers the pharmacy degree. What does that mean for some students? Polytechnic Diploma graduates in Singapore Diploma students from a polytechnic in Singapore will have to do the full degree at the foreign university without getting advanced standing. The total duration will be 7 years (3 years diploma + 4 years degree). 2+2 Twinning programmes (popular option in Malaysia) A popular option in Malaysia is that students join one of Malaysia’s private institutions for the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) programme for 2 years and transfer to a respective foreign university overseas partner to complete the degree in another 2 years. As of 1 August 2020, this option of obtaining a pharmacy degree will not be registrable in Singapore. Time saving alternatives after O Level/IGCSE (Australia and UK): A more time saving pathway to obtain a pharmacy degree is to gain admissions to a UK or Australian foundation programme (1 year) and progress to a Pharmacy degree programme (4 years) approved by the SPC. O Level Route to Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) in the United States Most U.S. universities accepts the O Level as an academic qualification to be admitted for the undergraduate programme. Students can start off with a pre-pharmacy programme (2 years) followed by a Doctor of Pharmacy (4 years) at an accredited pharmacy school n the US. The total duration is approximately 6 years.
