Western Australia (WA)

The state of Western Australia (WA) is almost the size of Western Europe. Mining is a massive industry in WA. In fact, Western Australia’s minerals and petroleum industry was worth over $106 billion for 2011-12. Western Australia is also home to the Argyle Mine, the world’s largest producer of diamonds. The capital city of WA is Perth and it is a popular destination for international students due to it's sunny weather. Perth is one of the most isolated city in the world, with the closest Australian city 2,200km away. In fact it is closer to Singapore than their capital, Canberra, There is no time difference between Perth and Malaysia and Singapore. Flights from Malaysia and Singapore to Perth is slightly over 4 hours, making it relatively easy to travel to and fro.

Duration of Programs

The duration for most foundation programs take one year and some with accelerated programs for  students  with Year 12 results, i.e. A Level, but do not meet the entry requirements for direct entry into the undergraduate program. The duration for a most bachelor degree is 3 years and the honours year can normally be completed in a year. Professional programs like Engineering, Allied Health Sciences programs are 4 years with direct honours. 

Accommodation and Living expenses

Living expenses including accommodation a year is approximately A$20,000 a year. Big cities like Sydney and Melbourne tend to command higher rent and living expenses from A$2,50 - A$4,00 per week if you live in the city. Cities like Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth will range from A$1,80 - A$3,00 in the city. Note that this cost is just an approximate and the cost varies according to many factors like location, size etc. There are options to stay in on-campus dorms, privately owned student accommodation and off-campus housing. 

Healthcare and Medical Insurance

As an international student in Australia, you are required to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire duration of your study in Australia. You can either arrange for the university to purchase for the OSHC (most popular choice) on  your behalf, or go directly through the provider’s website. You will need to purchase the OSHC before getting the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) to apply for the student's visa. 

Working Part-Time

Many international students take on part-time employment in Australia to make some extra pocket money and it is also a good opportunity to gain work experience which Australian employers value. Most student visas allow you to work for up to 40 hours every two weeks while your course is in session, and unrestricted hours during any scheduled course break. The minimum wage in Australia is currently $15.96 before tax. Australians are generally very punctual so make sure you are punctual at school and work.

Money Matters

Most, if not all Australian universities require a certain percentage of the first year's tuition fee to be collected as deposit to confirm a place in the institution. Bank drafts and electronic funds transfer like telegraphic transfers are the most common method. Cheque and credit card is also accepted. Before or after arriving in Australia, students advised to open a bank account under a student account so that their parents can transfer money to their bank account. Australian banks like Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank and Wespac are popular among international students as the EFTPOS (aka ATM) are easily located in the universities. 

Telecommunication

If you are a heavy internet data user outdoors, make many calls through your mobile or both, you may consider signing a postpaid account contract with a telco provider. If not, you may wish to consider a prepaid card. Universities in Australia have wifi access on campus. You may have to purchase internet date in on-campus accommodation. If you are living off-campus, you may wish to get a internet plan with an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Telcos like Optus, Telstra and Vodafone have student plans.and are popular choices among international students
