Duration of Programs
The traditional duration to complete a Bachelor degree for most colleges in the US is 4 years. Community colleges offer 2 years Associate degree programs which often has a TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) agreement with some US colleges to complete the Bachelor degree in 2 years. Professional programs like Medicine, Law, Dentistry, etc can only be done at the postgraduate level and it usually takes 4 years to complete.
Accommodation and Living expenses
The College Board reports that the average cost of room and board in 2017–2018 ranged from $10,800 at four-year public schools to $12,210 at private schools. Colleges also provide room and board estimates for living off campus based on typical student costs.
Healthcare and Medical Insurance
There are no specific insurance requirements for F visa holders set forth by the US Department of State. In most cases your school will determine what level of coverage you need, or you will need to make this determination for yourself if your school has no specific insurance requirements.
If your school has chosen to implement a mandatory insurance plan, you have no option but to purchase coverage predetermined by your college or university, and in many cases the cost of the insurance is automatically added to your tuition bill. The cost of insurance ranges from USD 30 - USD 50 per month depending on the different plans.
Working Part-Time
F-1 students may not work off-campus during the first academic year, but may accept on-campus employment subject to certain conditions and restrictions. After the first academic year, F-1 students may engage in three types of off-campus employment:
Money Matters
Most, if not all U.S. colleges or universities require a certain percentage of the first year's tuition fee to be collected as deposit to confirm a place in the institution. Electronic funds transfer like telegraphic transfers are the most common method. After arriving in the US, students advised to open a bank account under a student account so that their parents can transfer money to their bank account. The banks with the largest customer base in the US are Chase Bank, Bank of America, Citi and Wells Fargo, but there’s also a wealth of regional banks to choose from too.
Telecommunication
If you are a heavy internet data user outdoors, make many calls through your mobile or both, you may consider signing a postpaid account contract with a telco provider. If not, you may wish to consider a prepaid card. Universities in the US have wifi access on campus. You may have to purchase internet date in on-campus accommodation. If you are living off-campus, you may wish to get a internet plan with an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
